A modern, feminist retelling of the myth of Madame White Snake influenced by the work of Cuban artist Belkis Ayón. The white snake is pulled away from her sibling by an abusive, poisonous stranger who discards her. Her family never forgets her, and she soon returns to the waters that birthed her.

Jia Sung was born in Minnesota, bred in Singapore, now based in Brooklyn. She likes dumplings and the subversive potential of retellings. In her spare time, she is a monkey. She is currently an art director at Guernica, Teaching Artist in Residence at the Museum of Chinese in America, and Teaching Artist at the Children's Museum of the Arts.

Belkis Ayón, a Cuban printmaker, explored the mythology of Abakuá, an all-male secret society, recentering its narratives around the viewpoint of Princess Sikán, a tragic figure killed for revealing secrets in the original myths.
