Julius Eastman (1940-1990) was a black gay musician, composer and performer active in the East Coast and downtown New York underground music scene.
His major compositions are generally lumped into the Minimalist movement but he pioneered the integration of improvisation and pop music concepts into his work.
He collaborated with many leading artists of the era including: Arthur Russell, Peter Maxwell Davies, Lukas Foss, S.E.M Ensemble and Robert Wilson.
His compositions came very close to being completely lost but have been preserved and he is currently experiencing a revival.
